Goritsy is a tiny settlement near the White Lake. Goritsy's Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, built in 1397 by St. Kirill, who left a life of luxury to become closer to God. Interestingly, by the 16th century, the monastery was the second richest landowner in Russia and had close connections to ruler Ivan the Terrible.

The Ferapontov convent

The Ferapontov convent, is considered one of the purest examples of Russian medieval art, a reason given by UNESCO for its inscription on the World Heritage List. Located 130 km to the north of Vologda, it is a unique monument of the Old Russian painting due to the fact that in 1502 the Nativity cathedral was painted by the famous Russian icon painter Dionysus and his sons.
